Why the labia sting and itch – and what you can do about it

We recently received a question in our chat: "What problems do you have if it constantly burns and itches down there?" First and foremost, no woman on this earth should have to walk around with itchy and burning labia – regardless of age! We know how frustrating it can be to experience these symptoms and not really know what is behind them. Therefore, we want to clarify some of the most common causes of burning and itching in the labia, and what you can do to find relief.

COMMON CAUSES OF BURNING AND ITCHING IN THE LABIA

1. Dryness and fragile mucous membranes – not just for women in menopause
It is easy to believe that dry mucous membranes only affect women after menopause, but the fact is that all women can experience it. Causes can range from hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle to stress or side effects of certain medications. When the mucous membranes are dry, the skin becomes more sensitive and susceptible to both irritation and infections.

A study published in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease showed that women with dry mucous membranes have a higher risk of developing yeast infections, which in turn worsen symptoms with intense itching and burning. Restoring moisture balance is therefore the key to reducing both discomfort and the risk of future problems. Here, a moisturizing and caring gel can work wonders! VagiVital AktivGel is a hormone-free option that quickly moisturizes and rebuilds the mucous membranes, providing better resistance to both dryness and recurring infections.

2. Yeast infections – when the itching becomes unbearable
Almost all women will suffer from a yeast infection at some point in their lives. Typical symptoms are a burning sensation, intense itching, and a white, grainy discharge. Yeast thrives especially well when the environment in the genital area is disturbed – for example, with dry mucous membranes, wearing tight clothes, or after antibiotic treatment. If you recognize these symptoms, it is important to treat the yeast infection first. But to avoid it happening again, make sure to moisturize regularly with a product like VagiVital AktivGel so that you strengthen the mucous membranes and create an environment where the yeast has a harder time taking hold.

3. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) – when the balance is disturbed
Have you noticed a bad smell along with burning and itching? Then it could be a sign of bacterial vaginosis. BV occurs when the balance between good and bad bacteria in the genital area is disturbed, which can be due to anything from excessive washing to changes in pH levels. Unlike yeast infections, BV often gives a distinct fishy odor and thin, grayish discharge.

The treatment? Verniva vaginal mousse by VagiVital which effectively restores the balance within 7 days and relieves foul-smelling discharge already within 12 hours – completely without antibiotics, which reduces the risk of yeast infections as a result of the treatment.

4. Incorrect intimate care – time to stop using soap!
A common mistake is using regular soap to clean the genital area. Even a MILD intimate soap is still soap and can actually worsen the symptoms. Soap can dry out and irritate the already sensitive skin around the labia. If you feel like you are washing to get rid of the itching – stop immediately! Instead, choose a 100% soap-free and pH-balanced cleanser like VagiVital Moisturizing Cleanser. It cleans gently without drying out and helps you maintain a healthy moisture balance.

5. Contact allergy – more common than you think
Sometimes itching and burning can be caused by something as simple as an allergic reaction. Perfumed pads, detergents, or synthetic materials in underwear can create local irritation that causes the skin to react. Try switching to allergy-friendly and fragrance-free products and avoid tight clothes that make it warm and sweaty.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET RID OF THE BURNING AND ITCHING?

🌺 Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
Start using VagiVital AktivGel regularly. The gel restores moisture balance, relieves dryness, and strengthens the mucous membrane to resist both irritation and infections.

🌺 Always use a mild cleanser
Skip the soap and instead try VagiVital Moisturizing Cleanser intimate wash, which is based on AktivGel with the same moisturizing formula that cleans while providing maximum hydration.

🌺 Give the labia some air!
Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight pants. It is important that the skin can breathe and is not exposed to unnecessary heat and friction.

🌺 Be careful with intimate shaving
Shaving or waxing can easily cause small cuts and irritations in the sensitive skin around the labia. If you want to shave, use a new, clean razor and avoid shaving too often.
